NEWSLETTER 21 / 2016
DECEMBER 2016

Wow! what a busy year!

Looking back a lot has happened during the past 12 months. In January the old tram stop building was finally demolished, leaving a clear area for the new one to be built.

We’ve made some really good progress with assisting disabled people to gain access onto our local beaches at Thorpe Bay and Southend by providing special matting and it was great to see so many wheelchair users and other people with walking difficulties making such good use of it. For some people it was their first time on the beach!

In addition to this we also acquired a special sand cruiser children’s wheelchair which was available for hire during the summer and it was so pleasing to see parents take their young ones onto the beach to feel the sand between their toes.

Grants and pledges were received from the Echo news paper, Quill Construction, Southend Beach Hut Owners Association, Scope and the Garfield Weston Foundation. Donations from Ocean Beach Bar and Restaurant, Weston Homes, Adventure Island, the Roslin Hotel, Genting Club, Occasions Boutique the Freemasons and the list goes on, so apologies if we haven’t mentioned you by name, it’s been really heart warming to have so many offers of help from both local businesses and others further away. We also thank everyone who has donated money to us both large and small, and to all those people who have kindly volunteered their time to help.

We also give thanks to The Attic Cafe, Thorpe Bay Lawn Tennis Club for providing us with storage space, and  Thorpe Bay Yacht Club who continue to help us by allowing our committee to meet at their premises.

And then there were fund raising highlights such as Yoga 4 All by Keeley and the sponsored walk by Project 49 and Can Do. These events really do bring the community together and it’s a pleasure to be part of it!

Sadly Bob Craven had to resign from our charity earlier in the year due to health reasons. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Well there you have it! Another year nearly over and looking forward to the next one. Thank you to everyone for your continuing help and support and wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!

Wonderful news from the Garfield Weston Foundation. They have offered to support us with a £25,000 pledge towards our building costs. This is another big step forward in bringing us closer to achieving our goal!
Thank you

Update

The money is still coming in for this event
We are now approaching the £2,800 mark!

Many thanks to Project 49, Can Do and to all the lovely people who took part on the day. Also a big thank you to all those who are continuing to give so generously to this hugely successful event!!!
Beach Matting at Thorpe Bay

We have taken up most of the matting in preparation for the winter and as a precaution from high tides
We will install the matting again in the spring of next year. It was really pleasing to see it being so well used by many people. As well as wheelchair users, people with walking difficulties and families with push chairs found it much easier to access the beach.

A kind donation made by the Freemasons

A cheque for £500 was presented to Mike Stafford and the Tram Stop Trustees at Saxon Hall in Southend on 29th November by Worship Master Ken Carter of the Thundersley branch of the Freemasons towards the cost of the windows in the new building

Many thanks to the Freemasons for their generosity
Fashion Show at Gentings Update

We're pleased to say that this was another hugely successful event where we raised £1396. Once again a big thank you to the Genting Club, Occasion Boutique and to all those local people and businesses who kindly donated the wonderful raffle prizes. Thank you for your support
